The Creative Muvo 2 Bluetooth speaker we’ve got for review today is the latest addition to the Muvo family of portable speakers, it’s an IP66 rated water-resistant Bluetooth speaker that features Bluetooth 4.2, a built-in MP3 player and a 10 hour battery life – wrapped up in a dust-proof/water-resistant body.
1What’s in the Box
The Muvo 2 comes in a very attractive hard plastic display case that has most of the speaker’s specs and features displayed along the bottom of the case. Contents include:
- The Creative Muvo 2 speaker
- The charging cable
- The Muvo 2 user manual
- Warranty leaflets
The design of the Muvo 2 looks strikingly similar to the Muvo Mini we’ve reviewed a few months back, with a slight variation in the speaker grille design. Dimension wise, the Muvo 2 measures 7.5(L)x2.5(H)x1.5(D) inches and weighs just under 14 ounces.
Sitting on the top panel are the Muvo 2’s 6 hexagonal function buttons, 2 LED status light indicators and the microphone.
From the right these function buttons include the play/pause button, the volume up/skip forward button, the volume down/previous track button, the playback mode button (M), the Bluetooth pairing/speakerphone button and the power button.
At the back of the speaker you’ll find all the input ports, these include the AUX port, the USB charging/playback port and the MicroSD card slot for standalone audio playback via the built-in MP3 player (see playback options section below for more details).
There’s also a cutout on the left side where you can attach a lanyard for additional portability – a very useful feature that was missing in the original Muvo Mini.
Creative has loaded the Muvo 2 speaker with 2 full range speaker drivers and a passive bass radiator which adds a very noticeable depth and boom to bass heavy tracks. Overall clarity is superb at higher volume levels, even at 90% volume it stays crisp and clear without any distortion or audio degradation whatsoever.
In terms of overall volume level, you can easily use the Muvo 2 to power a small get together and if you still need more power you can even link two of these bad boys up for double the volume.
The Muvo 2 comes well prepared to handle to any music source you might have. Older/wired devices can easily connect using the AUX port at the back and any Bluetooth device can be paired instantly thanks to the speaker’s Bluetooth V4.2 – which is the latest version currently available.
USB Mode – USB mode is a handy feature that allows you to play audio from your computer or laptop using the USB cable that came with the Muvo 2. This only takes a few minutes to setup, you’ll need to download the USB drivers from here and then install it to your PC. Once installed, you’ll need to press the “M” button until the LED display turns purple which means it’s now in USB playback mode. Downloading and setting up the software takes about 3 minutes tops.
MicroSD Mode – The Creative Muvo 2 Bluetooth speaker also has a built-in MP3 player that allows you to play music directly from a MicroSD card, this doesn’t require any mobile phone or tablet to setup – just plug in the MicroSD card and press the “M” button on the top panel until the LED light turns yellow.
You’ll then be able to use the speaker’s function buttons to play/pause, skip forward, take calls and pretty much anything else you could have done if you were using a mobile phone. The speaker supports MicroSD cards with a maximum capacity of 128GB and it must be formatted FAT16 or FAT32, supported audio formats include MP3, WAV, WMA and FLAC.
The Muvo 2 user manual states an average playback time of up to 10 hours from the 2200mAh battery. As always, this would vary depending on the connection type you’re using, the type of music you’re listening to and the volume level you set. Using Bluetooth streaming and a 70% volume level, I was able to get 11 hours 27 minutes once the speaker was fully charged.
Tip – The Muvo 2 has a built-in feature that allows you to check the battery level on the fly, just double press the “M” button when the speaker is on and you’ll see the LED light flashing – if it flashes green it means the battery is at 75-100%, if it flashes yellow it’s between 50-75%, purple means 25-50% and red means 1-25%.
