EMIE MR04 Bluetooth Speaker Review

If you’re in the market for something a little different, what about some portable minimalist chic? The impressive-looking Emie MR04 Bluetooth speaker, quirkily known as ‘The Radio’, has vintage style to spare and very much fits the bill.

This wireless speaker looks for all the world like one of the smallish personal radios of yesteryear, yet it is equipped with all the Bluetooth connectivity needed to stream music from today’s phones and portable audio devices.

Minimalist simplicity

At just 112 × 30 × 78.5mm, and weighing in at only 0.35 pounds, the diminutive MR04 can justifiably claim to offer pocket-sized portable music listening. It’s also light enough to be tucked into a backpack or bag without fuss or inconvenience. With a rectangular profile, sleek rounded corners and a simple perforated speaker grille, ‘The Radio’s’ design clearly lives up to its billing.

Adding to the retro ‘portable-transistor’ ambience, the MR04’s durable cabinet enclosure is finished in a stylish, textured wood-grain effect which uses a water-transfer printing technique. This, Emie advise, guarantees that no two units will have exactly the same design pattern. The front grille is a plain white colour with just the company logo neatly engraved in the top right-hand corner.

The back consists of just a blank white panel, and the top of the unit is plain too, with only a single control to access the MR04’s functions. This is coloured metallic silver and designed to look like an analogue radio control knob.

The right-hand side panel (as viewed from the front) is plain once again, with connecting slots for aux-input and micro-charging positioned on the right along with LED status indicators. And finally, the base incorporates a non-slip suction pad for added stability.

Pocket audio

Given the dimensions of its acoustic enclosure, there is a limit to what the Emie MR04 Bluetooth speaker can be expected to deliver in terms of audio performance. Audio power is (sensibly) limited to 2 watts, and is delivered via a full-range, 1.5-inch speaker driver.

The result is a reasonably clear and balanced music output which, though it probably falls short of the manufacturer’s description of ‘mighty’, does indicate the skill of Emie’s designers in fine-tuning the audio configuration to optimum effect.

Bluetooth pairing

The MR04 employs Bluetooth version 3.0 with a CSR chipset, which means music fans should be able to expect good quality audio streaming and trouble-free Bluetooth pairing. Non-Bluetooth music sources can be played via a cabled connection to the aux input, and ‘The Radio’ can offer up to 6 hours playback on one charge of its lithium-ion battery.

Main features and specs:
